Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery involves replacing the worn out knee joint with an artificial joint, or prosthesis. The Knee replacement is made of a metal alloy (Cobalt/Chromium) and plastic (polyethylene). After shaping the bones to fit the artificial joint, the prosthesis is then secured to the bone with bone cement.

The operation typically takes between one and one and a half hours, with additional time required prior to the operation to provide the anaesthetic. The type of anaesthesia you have will be determined by your general medical health and your own wishes. The majority of patients who undergo hip or knee replacements are offered a spinal anaesthetic should they choose.
